Levada Nova oder Levada Nova dos Canhas oder Levada (do Arco) da Calheta oder Levada da Calheta - Ponta do Sol


Gegend: Südküste/Südwesten

Madre: Calheta I Power Station N 32°44.850 W 17°09.000 654 M.ü.M.
Ab 2022 wird die Levada Nova zusätzlich mit dem Abfluss aus dem Kraftwerk Calheta III Kraftwerk gespiesen (N 32°44.725 W 17°09.005 664 M.ü.M.)

Verlauf: Oberhalb Calheta, Arco da Calheta, Pinheiros, Barreiro e Feiteireas, Lombo de Sao Joao, Covas, Lombo das Tercas etwa 300 Meter oberhalb der Levada do Coronel, die alte Levada ging noch etwa 100 Meter weiter bis in den nächsten Bach

Ende: Lombo das Tercas ca. 615 M.ü.M.

Länge: 16,4 km

Baujahr: 1953 (Planungsbeginn 1943), Endabschnitt ab Covas wurde 2015 neu gebaut an der Stelle der alten Levada

Historisches: Im grossen Plan der Levadaneubauten von 1943 war vorgesehen, am Ende der Levada Nova, wo heute der Überlauf zur Ribeira da Ponta do Sol steht, ein weiteres Kraftwerk zu bauen.
Elemente wären der Zufluss über die Levada Nova, eine Druckröhre in die Ribeira da Ponta do Sol und am Ort der Madre der Levada Nova und der Levada do Moinho ein Turbinenhaus. Die Höhendifferenz hier beträgt 250 Meter. Der Plan wurde aber nie umgesetzt, dieser Levadanteil verfiel denn auch, bis er im Jahre 2015 neu renoviert wurde.
Allenfalls war der Plan, die Madres der Levada Nova und der Levada do Moinho zusätzlich mit Wasser zu versorgen. Dort wird ja seit 2016 Wasser vom westlichen Hang der Ribeira da Ponta do Sol in Röhren zur Madre der Levada Nova und damit indirekt auch zur Levada do Moinho geleitet, nachdem das Hochwasser die alte Madre (Staumauer) arg mitgenommen hat.
Mittlerweile (2022) sieht dieser renovierte Teil wieder ziemlich mitgenommen aus, hier dürfte in naher Zukunft kein Wasser mehr fliessen.

Funktion: Bewässerung des zentralen Südküste, bei Wasserüberschuss wird das Wasser vom Lombo das Tercas in einem Bach ins Tal der Ribeira da Ponta do Sol geleitet, wo es nördlich der Madre der Levada Nova und der Levada do Moinho in den Bach fliesst und die beiden genannten Levadas speist.

Zugang: diverse (Calheta, Canhas, Arco do Calheta, etc.)

Zustand: Einfach, das neugebaute Endstück ist teilweise etwas ausgesetzt, aber bis auf eine Stelle, wo ein Erdrutsch das neue Geländer bereits wieder weggerissen hat, gut gesichert, das alte Endstück ist zugewachsen und nur schwer zugänglich

Bemerkungen: Der Abschnitt vom Kraftwerk bis Arco da Calheta trägt auch den Namen Levada do Arco da Calheta, ab Arco da Calheta bis Covas auch Levada da Ponta do Sol
