09.05.2019 Wanderung entlang der abwechslungsreichen Levada Velha das Canhas

Anfahrt: Canico - Ribeira Brava - Ponta do Sol - Canhas

Verlauf: Unser Auto haben wir in Levada do Poiso an der ER 209 oberhalb des Torre Relogio da Levada do Poiso schräg gegenüber der Open Air-Ausstellung eines Künstlers parkiert. Dies ist eine Mischung aus Ronaldo-Schrein und hinduistischer Tierdarstellung, etwas schräg, aber ganz amüsant.
Über einen Abfluss aus dem grossen Speicherbecken der Levada Nova dos Canhas erreichten wir die Nova und gleich beim westlichen Beckenrand stösst man auf das Ende der Levada Velha dos Canhas, unserem Fixpunkt für heute.
Das erste Stück kann nicht durchgehend begangen werden, da stehen ein paar Zäune im Weg, später nach der Strassenkreuzung geht es etwas unwegsam und eng zwischen Häusern und oberhalb von Feldern weiter, hier als Doppellevada, deren unterer Teil teils etwas zugemüllt ist. Sobald man die Häuser verlassen hat, geht man in einer Wiese entlang der Doppellevada, bis sie ins Unterholz eintaucht. Hier kann man auf der parallel verlaufenden Piste gehen und die Levada von oben betrachten. Nachdem die Piste die Levada gekreuzt hat, sieht man einen sehr alten Levadateiler, der die Zuleitung zu den beiden parallel verlaufenden Levadaästen regelt.
Jetzt geht es weiter im Wald, man kann auf dem relativ hohen und teils schmalen Levadadamm oder auf dem bergwärts versetzten Begleitweg gehen, dieser ist deutlich komfortabler. Nachdem der Weg wieder über eine kleine Brücke auf die Levada führt, wird der Begleitweg auch wieder besser begehbar, es geht durch Eukalyptus und Ginster in Serpentinen weiter mit ein paar kleinen Zwischensteigungen. Nach einem kurzen, steilen Abschnitt erreicht man eine Betonpiste, dieser entlang läuft auch die Levada.
Man erreicht eine Art Doppelwasserfall, der obere ergiesst sich aus einem unbegehbaren Abschnitt zu einem Häuschen, an desssen Basis ein zweiter Wasserfall herausquillt.
Das nächste Stück muss auf einer Piste umgangen werden, man kann zwischenzeitlich kurz zur Levada hochsteigen und findet einen nächsten alten Levadateiler und eine abzweigende Levada. Gleich oberhalb dieser Stelle erreicht man den grossen Wassertank, bewacht von 2 neugierigen, aber etwas unberechenbaren Kühen.
Weiter geht es im Wald und bald auf eine grosse Wiese, ab hier ist die Betonrinne bis zur Madre betoniert, was aber nicht weiter störend ist. Man taucht langsam in Tal der Ribeira do Covo Grande und das Erscheinungsbild ändert sich sofort. Nach den sanften Wiesen dominiert hier eine schroffe, tiefe Schlucht, auch die Vegetation ändert sich schlagartig. Der Weg ist gut gesichert und man erreicht die Basis der Levadatreppe, die den Talgrund überbrückt. Ganz schön laut und wild hier, aber schaurig schön....
Auf der Treppe geht es über den Talgrund und oben findet man sich wieder in einer Wiesenlandschaft, schon krass diese Gegensätze. Leicht ansteigend zu einem doch etwas merkwürdig säuerlich duftenden Bauernhof, hier werden vermutlich irgend welche organischen Materialien gelagert, die sich langsam zersetzen.
Es geht aber gleich wieder in den Wald und wieder ins etwas weniger schroffe Tal der Ribeira do Curral Velho. Ganz hinten trifft man auch hier auf eine Levadatreppe, hier wird aber zusätzlich Wasser im Bach gestaut und in die Levada eingeleitet. Etwas weniger laut, etwas weniger wild, aber auch sehr schön.
Die Levada zieht sich nun talauswärts um den nächsten Lombo und erstreckt sich in das tiefe Tal der Ribeira do Caldeirao, dem Hauptast der späteren Ribeira da Madalena. Gut gesichert bis nach hinten zur Madre. Eigentlich habe ich erwartet, dass man von der Madre auf den Weg und später Piste auf der andere Flusseite gelangen kann, aber der einzige Ort, wo man auch Spuren erkennen konnte, war eine glitschige Felswand direkt über dem Bachbett, nicht wirklich einladend.
So haben wir, nach einer ausgiebigen Pause, den Rückweg auf dem gleichen Weg angetreten, den Schluss durch die Häuser haben wir durch den Abstieg zur Levada Nova dos Canhas umgangen.
Zum Schluss durfte natürlich ein Besuch beim Torre Relogio da Levada do Poiso nicht fehlen.

Start: 10.15 Canhas

Ende: 14.10 Canhas

Zustand: Einfache Wanderung, die ausgesetzten Bachpassagen sind durchgehend gut gesichert. Einzig der unterste Teil zwischen den Häusern ist nicht so attraktiv, kann aber auf der Strasse/Piste oder über die Levada Nova das Canhas umgangen werden.

Bemerkungen: Kurze, leichte, spannende, abwechslungsreiche Levadawanderung mit Überraschungen!
