Verlauf: Wieder mal mit Issi auf Levadaentdeckungstour:
Start im Zentrum von Camara de Lobos an der Av. Nova Cidade, Treppenaufstieg bei der Capela de Sao Candido bis zur Levada da Castanheira, kurzes Stück entlang der Levada in Fliessrichtung bis zur Absperrung, hier geht sie weiter in der Steinschlaggalerie und ist nicht zugängig.
Hier befindet sich auch die Fonte da Pedra, durch deren Basis auch die Levada da Castanheira fliesst
Gegen die Fliessrichtung haben wir ein paar Irrwege begangen, schliesslich war dann der Weg klar, zuerst vorbei an alten Levadaabschnitten, die in die Felswand gehauen wurden, dann durch Bananeplantagen. Es wird immer unwegsamer und enger, bis man unten an der Cascata de Agua de Alto steht.
Die Levada da Castanheira verläuft ab hier in 3 übereinander liegenden Wassermühlen, die gut erhalten sind, der Aufstiegsweg führt kreuz und quer zwischen den Gebäuden. Oben angekommen sieht man ein ausgeklügelktes Verteilsystem.
Oberhalb der Ponte do Serrado sind wir der Levada da Castanheira gefolgt. Das schmale Mäuerchen ist definitiv nichts für Unerfahrene, es braucht ziemlich Überwindung, hier bis zur Madre vorzudringen.
Zurück bei der Ponte do Serrado haben wir die Ribeira da Caixa gequert und von der gegenüberliegenden Seite den Blick auf die 3 Wassermühlen genossen, der Wasserfall war leider nur ein Schatten seiner selbst.
Aufstieg auf dem Caminho do Lagar da Giesta zur Rua Corredor Manuel Franca Doria und auf dieser weiter bis zum Beginn der Vereda Velha da Ribeira da Caixa. Auf diesem Abstieg zum Fluss und kurzer Aufstieg bis zur Kreuzung mit der Levada de Braz Gil de Faria.
Dieser entlang bis zur Madre. Das letzte Stück bin ich alleine gegangen, das ist alles eng und glitschig und nicht ungefährlich. Die Madre der Levada de Braz Gil de Faria liegt oberhalb eines imposanten Wasserfalles.
Zurück zur Kreuzung mit der Vereda Velha da Ribeira da Caixa und weiter entlang der Levada de Braz Gil de Faria unterhalb des Caminho da Ribeira da Caixa bis zur Galeria, auf der man die Autobahn überquert.
Kurze Zeit später kommt man an der Capela das Preces vorbei, weiter auf der Travessa da Capela das Preces, die Levada de Braz Gil de Faria ist hier verrohrt. Auf dem Caminho da Levada do Salao weiter, bis man die Autobahn unterquert.
Entlang der wieder offenen Levada de Braz Gil de Faria bis zur Estrada do Limoeiro, dieser entlang und weiter über die Rua Joao Ricardo Ferreira Cesar und den Caminho das Preces bis zur Estrada de Santa Clara.
In der 360-Grad-Kurve der Estrada de Santa Clara trifft man auf den Endast der Levada da Castanheira, die hier in der Felswand verläuft. Auf der Bergseite der Strasse sieht man den alten Weiterverlauf bis zum Tunnel, von der Aussichtsterrasse auf der andern Seite der Av. da Autonomia sieht man den abenteuerlichen Verlauf in der Klippe.
Ab hier zurück zum Ausgangspunkt.

Zustand: Der Einstieg ist nicht ganz einfach zu finden
Die Levada da Castanheira ist bis oberhalb der 3 Wassermühlen relativ einfach, bis zur Madre ziemlich gefährlich.
Die Levada de Braz Gil de Faria ist bis auf den Madrebereich gut zu gehen, je weiter talwärts um so einfacher. Der Madrebereich ist spannend, aber ziemlich gefährlich.

Bemerkungen: Erstaunlich, wie rasch man ab dem sehr urbanen Zentrum von Camara de Lobos im Grünen landet.
Die 3 Wassermühlen sind sehr spannend, vor allem, weil sie sehr gut erhalten sind!
