Eigentlich waren die Philippinen in unserer ursprünglichen Reiseplanung gar nicht vorgesehen, aber wir haben Ende 1984 ein Ticket Hongkong - Manila - Bangkok - Schweiz gebucht, das wir mit einem Ticket Hongkong - Bangkok - Singapur - Jakarta und zurück frei kombinieren konnten. So war ein Stopp in Manila automatisch gegeben, und wenn man schon mal dort ist, sollte man sich einen Kurztripp in den Norden von Luzon zu den Reisterrassen nicht entgehen lassen.
Und es hat sich definitiv gelohnt, die landschaftlichen Besonderheiten der 'Ifugao-Welt' und die ausserordentlich netten und interessanten Bewohner dieser Gegend, die damals noch weitgehend vom Massentourismus verschont war, haben die langen Busfahrten mehr als kompensiert.
1991 wurde die Gegend zum Nationalschatz erklärt, 1995 wurden die Reisterrassen von Batad und Banaue zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe erklärt!

'Batad-Inn':

Im Gespräch mit dem Betreiber des Batad Inn haben wir ein paar Details zu Kultur und Hintergrund der Ifugao-Kultur erfahren:

- Die Terrassen sind mehr als 2000 Jahre alt, es sind die einzigen Bauten, die aus der Zeit vor dem Kolonialismus stammen.
- Es wird neben Reis auch Gemüse, Süsskartoffeln und Mais angebaut.
- Es gibt praktisch niemanden mehr, der diese Bauwerke neu erstellen kann, und die bestehenden werden nur notdürftig repariert.
- Oberhalb der Terrassen (über 1500 m.ü.M.) werden Wälder zur Wasserversorgung unterhalten, der Wasserfluss muss kontinuierlich von Terrasse zu Terrasse gehen, ohne dass Wasser gestaut wird.
- Das Wasser wird mit ausgeklügelten Wasserverteilsystemen verteilt (Dämme, Leitungen etc.)
- Die Terrassen sind alle in Familienbesitz
- Nur etwa 20% der Ifugao sind Christen, die andern praktizieren verschiedene animistische Religionen
- Es gibt immer noch Kriege zwischen verschiedenen Stämmen
- Ratten werden nicht gejagt, sondern gefüttert, dann ziehen sie nach 2-3 Tagen weiter zum nächsten Haus (?)

Es handelte sich hier um die Zeremonie für einen kranken Mann, ein Götterbeschwörung:

2 Schweine lagen gefesselt in der Mitte des Platzes, die Leute trinken Reiswein und sind halb betrunken.
Hölzer werden im Rhythmus aneinandergeschlagen, 2 Priester fuchteln mit Speeren um die Schweine herum und die Schweine schreien fürchterlich.
Reiswein wird über die Schweine geleert, ein Huhn wird auf die Schweine platziert, dann werden die Schweine losgebunden und ihnen die Kehle durchtrennt, der Schwanz wird den noch lebenden Tieren abgeschnitten.
Später werden die Pfoten abgeschnitten und an die Kinder verteilt. Die toten Schweine werden ins Haus des alten Mannes gebracht, dort gibt es weitere Zeremonien, während die Leute langsam sehr betrunken sind.
Die Schweine werden aufs Feuer gelegt und die Haut abgezogen. 'Now you can make pictures, if you want. People expect you to buy two bottles of Gin, but only if you want.....'
Die beiden Flaschen sind in 5 Minuten leer, die Leute sind kaum mehr ansprechbar, und wir verziehen uns!

Auf dem Rückweg von Batad nach Banaue sind wir an einer weiteren Zeremonie vorbeigekommen. Wir durften nur kurz zuschauen und keine Bilder machen (es kostete uns dann auch keine 2 Flaschen Gin...):

Ein alter Mann ist vor 2 Tagen gestorben, er wird vor seinem Haus an einen Pfosten gebunden, die Fliegen werden vom Gesicht des Toten vertrieben und die gesamte Verwandschaft kommt zu Besuch. Die Kinder spielen vor dem Verstorbenen.
Später werden die Knochen des Verstorbenen wieder ausgegraben, damit seine Seele im Totenreich seine Ruhe findet (so habe ich es wenigstens verstanden...)

Es soll nur 3 Orte auf der Erde geben, an denen Särge nicht vergraben, sondern in Felswände aufgehängt werden:
Im Südwesten von China (Bo-Stamm), auf Sulawesi (Toraja-Stamm) in Indonesien, wo wir später auch noch vorbeikamen, und eben hier auf Luzon in Sagada!

Es ist sozusagen eine Stadt in der Stadt, mit eigenen beschrifteten Strassen und sehr grosszügig ausgestatten Häusern, die um die Ruhestätten von reichen verstorbenen Chinesen gebaut wurden und den Verwandten erlauben, sich längere Zeit bei ihren Verstorbenen aufzuhalten. Es gibt Tempelanlagen und Briefkästen!
Errichtet wurde der Friedhof im 19. Jahrhundert und seither ist er stetig gewachsen.!
